Ingredient Spotlight: Hyaluronic Acid

You know an ingredient has officially gone viral when it is picked up by the mainstream media. The other day I was sitting on the couch watching one of my favorite shows while on a commercial break I got up to refill my wine glass and hear the words Hyaluronic Acid faintly in the background. I ran back to the television only to discover one of the most popular names in drugstore skin care promoting their newest face cream featuring this ingredient. So we are hearing and seeing this ingredient left and right but do we know how and why it works? Hyaluronic Acid is not a new lab created high tech ingredient like many might think, nor is it a typical type of acid which tend to promote exfoliation in the skin. In my opinion this magical molecule has one of the most important roles in maintaining overall health and function of the skin. On top of the many benefits it can offer it is an ingredient that can change the look of your complexion within an instant. So let’s dive deep into what this ingredient is, what it does, and which products are worth the investment!

Hyaluronic Acid is essentially a moisture binding molecule, it has the ability to hold 1000 times its weight in water and is categorized as a humectant. We naturally produce HA in our skin and in our bodies too! It can actually be found in its highest concentration in our skin, joints and eyeballs. It has a clear jelly like consistency and its main purpose is to provide lubrication/moisture. Why is this important in the skin? Quite simply, hydrated skin is happy healthy plump and glowing skin. This molecule aids in binding moisture to the skin to plump and hydrate from the inside out. Think about the appearance of sand at the beach vs sand at the desert, two very different moisture levels resulting in two very different appearances, so the more moisture in your skin the more hydration which results in a smooth plump appearance. Hyaluronic Acid also boosts and supports the production of healthy collagen which is also essential for a youthful complexion. So if we naturally produce HA in the skin and body then why invest in skincare featuring this ingredient? Get ready for this sad bit-

As we age our production of HA decreases significantly, therefore it is absolutely essential to add this ingredient into your regimen as early as you can to slow the aging process and maintain healthy skin function.

Now that we have a better understanding on what HA is and why we need it, let’s talk about products I am loving that never fail to give me that juicy glow.

Hydrating Floral Mask – Tata Harper Skincare $95

With 1000 different molecular weights of Hyaluronic Acid this mask is my go to for optimal supplementation and infusion of plant based HA. It has a clear silky smooth gel texture that melts into the skin upon application. The ethereal and uplifting pale blue color is so soothing and the light floral scent comes from rose otto. In addition to all of that juicy HA this mask is packed with tons of vitamins and minerals, anti-oxidants and anti-inflammatories! After using this mask the skin is noticeably plump and glowing. Any redness in the skin has melted away and the overall tone is even and brighter. This truly is a complete nutritional supplement for your skin. Use it as often as you need, you can even sleep in it! Formulated for ALL SKIN TYPES because dehydration is different than dryness, and let’s face it- we’re all dehydrated when it comes to our skin.

Hyaluronic Serum 200 – Evolve Organic Beauty $46

Evolve Organic Beauty offers a comprehensive, affordable, and effective range for all skin types. This serum has to be one of my favorite products from this UK based brand. Formulated with 200mg of Hyaluronic Acid this clear lightly scented serum can be evolve_hyaluronic_serum_at_credo_beautyused AM and PM under your moisturizer of choice to improve overall moisture levels as well as reduce dehydration lines. In addition to HA this formula features a pomegranate extract which is a super reparative antioxidant that helps fight inflammation and free radical damage. Formulated for ALL SKIN TYPES

Hyaluronic Gel Moisturizer – Tata Harper Skincare $116

I am currently OBSESSED with this moisturizer! It is THS newest launch and perfect for the warm summer temperatures. It of course contains hyaluronic acid, but it also has a unique gel water technology that actually acts as a skin solution! The gel water technology is made up of chia seed water, marsh samphire, and tremella mushroom. These three ingredients are going to feed the skin with ultra rich lightweight hydration, increase the skins capacity to store it, and prevent it from escaping. SO COOL. The consistency is gel like and super lightweight, the skin literally drinks it up. This moisturizer also has tons of vitamins and minerals for the skin including a super awesome extract from the banana flower which evens the skin tone while combating free radials. This is a great swap for warmer temperatures that will actually help to balance oily or combination skin.

Get your glow on!

An Estheticians Guide: 3 Masks to Combat Oily Skin

I am a total masking advocate, who personally masks at least 3x a week. Masking your skin is like supplementing your skin. Whatever it may be going through you can help to fix and heal with the right mask. I like to think of masks like a nutrient dense smoothie or yummy green juice- we know they are good for us so we drink them. They nourish our bodies and give us nutrients we might otherwise miss in our regular diets. Masks work very similarly, they are highly concentrated, nutrient dense treatments that literally feed your skin with ingredients that promote balance- and when skin is IN balance all seems right in the world.

All skin types can benefit from a masking regimen, as long as the right mask is being used. Oily skin types are a result of an imbalance in the skin where the skin is producing too much oil on its own. Oily skin types often come with a plethora of other skin issues as well which include:

  • uneven, rough texture
  • breakouts
  • blackheads and or whiteheads
  • large pores

The correct mask, when used regularly can help to eliminate these skin issues and bring balance back to the skin, which allows your skin to function at its most optimal level. Here are the top 3 non-toxic masks I recommend to clients, use in the treatment room, as well as regularly use on myself for oily skin and all of the skin ailments that come along with it. Happy Masking!

Resurfacing Mask by Tata Harper $58

This BHA based mask is my holy grail you guys. It is 100% natural, non-toxic, cruelty-free, and vegan and most importantly IT WORKS. The jelly like texture of this mask glides onto skin and dries comfortably clear. It smells clinical and fruity at the same time and can be used in a variety of different ways (which I LOVE). This mask delivers an instant glow to this skin that you will notice immediately after the first use and gives the skin “peel” like results without any of the downtime.

Key Ingredients:

  • Aloe
  • Willow Bark Extract
  • Pomegranate Enzymes
  • French Pink Clay

The french pink clay in this mask aids in drawing out impurities and the pomegranate enzymes gently chomp away and digest dead surface skin. The aloe helps to soothe the skin throughout this process and keeps it nice and hydrated. The reason this mask works so well for oily skin types though is because of the high concentration of Beta Hydroxy Acid in the formula which is derived from willow bark. Beta Hydroxy Acid = Salicylic Acid and salicylic acid is the ONLY acid that can actually penetrate oil which makes it “lipophilic”, all other acids like glycolic or lactic for example only work on the surface layers of the skin. The bha gets deep into the pores clearing them out which helps to regulate oil production and gets rid of congestion & breakouts leaving you with smooth, glowing, radiant skin. To use this mask begin with clean skin and leave on anywhere from 10-30 minutes and rinse. You can also sleep in this mask overnight, I do this for 2-3 days in a row whenever my skin is out of balance and I swear by this technique. It promotes a total skin reset, heals acne, regulates oil production, and leaves behind baby soft skin. You can also use it to spot treat specific areas or on a deep blemish to promote rapid healing. Love + Charcoal Mask by One Love Organics $49

One Love Organics is at the top of my most loved brands list and their newest launch does not disappoint. This activated charcoal based mask deeply detoxifies and purifies while leaving skin feeling surprisingly moisturized after use. Most charcoal based masks are very harsh on the skin and can worsen many skin conditions by drying out the skin. However, One Love Organics has found a way to incorporate the purifying properties of activated charcoal into a treatment that not only balances oil production but helps to repair the skin barrier, hydrate, and fight aging.

Key Ingredients:

  • Activated Charcoal
  • Cupuacu Butter
  • Alpine Rose
  • Rose Clay

The gorgeous grey shade of this gel textured mask is super cooling on the skin and unlike other charcoal based masks does not tighten and dry up on the skin. The cupuacu butter is rich in essential fatty acids to help plump and hydrate the skin- preventing premature aging. The alpine rose softens the skin while boosting collagen production and strengthening the skins barrier. Skin barrier function is an important thing to address when trying to balance the skin. When the barrier is compromised that is when we start to see and experience issues like over production of oil and acne. Addressing this is a key component in treating and maintaining the health of your skin. Rose clay will absorb excess oil and the activated charcoal will deeply purge the pores leaving your with super smooth skin. Since oily skin types usually experience larger pore sizes, especially in the t-zone, this mask is amazing to combat and minimize their appearance. Keeping them clean and clear will help to keep them from getting larger and makes them a LOT less noticeable.  This mask is 98.6% natural, vegan, cruelty-free, and EcoCert certified. To use apply a thick even layer on clean skin and leave on for 10-20 minutes and rinse clean. You can also use this to spot treat certain areas that are especially congested or blemished. Eternal Reign Detoxyfing Mask by Ranavat Botanics $65

This superfood based mask has a nutrient rich and complex ingredient deck so good I almost want to blend it into my daily smoothies. Eternal Reign is a powdered mask, say what? Yes, powder. This is extra special because this allows for the mask to stay fresh and potent activated only when you choose to mix up a fresh batch. You can use any type of liquid to activate this mask like coconut water, rose water, your favorite hydrating mist, or just normal water- the possibilities are truly endless with this mask. You can customize it according to what your skin needs which will vary from week to week. This mask is 100% natural, non-toxic, cruelty-free, MadeSafe certified.

Key Ingredients:

  • French Green Clay
  • Manuka Honey
  • Moringa
  • Spirulina
  • Vitamin C

The french green clay in this mask draws out and absorbs excess oil  from the skin while the manuka honey moisturizes and rids the skin of bacteria which will help heal any existing blemishes. Moringa is highly anti-inflammatory and antioxidant rich which will bring life back to skin as well as soothe any inflamed areas. Spirulina is currently my favorite superfood to use in my daily smoothies so that fact that it is part of this formula makes me so freakin HAPPY! Spirulina is an amazing detoxifier for the body and when topically applied the list of benefits is long. Spirulina helps the skin speed up cellular turnover which keeps pores clean and skin clear. Spirulina is packed with antioxidants too that fight free radical damage. The topical vitamin C powder in this blend evens out skin tone & texture while brightening the overall complexion, yes please! To use mix one scoop of the powder (spoon is included with the mask) into a bowl and add in your liquid of choice. Mix until you get a velvety mousse like texture and apply to face. Let mask set for 10-20 minutes and rinse clean. Learn more here.

I hope this guide helps you in navigating the millions of mask options on the market today and enables you to make the best choice to help keep oil production in check, pores invisible, and skin complelty glowing.

De Lune , The Natural Solution To Painful Periods

Periods suck, period. I have always suffered from severe period pain and PMDD leaving me to dread that time of the month. My monthly symptoms include intense mood swings, irritability, fatigue, bloat, cramping, and lower back pain. My cramping is usually very painful the first two days of my cycle, sometimes bringing me to tears. My other symptoms onset a couple of days before my cycle and last throughout it. To get through this terrible time I pop ibuprofen like candy and I am more than certain I have surpassed the daily recommended dose on days that felt unbearable. When De Lune reached out to me to sample their product I have to admit I was very skeptical.

∇ What is it?

De Lune makes a nutritional supplement geared to alleviate period pain and symptoms using clinically proven all natural ingredients.  The formula took three years to develop and enlisted the expertise of doctors, dieticians, herbalists, and researchers who together created this powerful potion. Read more about the brand here. So I received a bottle of the 30 ml supplement and it conveniently arrived the day before my cycle was about to begin. De Lune recommends to start taking the supplement one day prior to the beginning of your cycle and everyday until your symptoms subside. To use you drop six full droppers of the supplement into your favorite calming tea, beverage, or water and enjoy. After reading about the product and about all the ingredients in it I was anxious and excited to try it out for myself, although I do have to admit having huge doubts as to whether or not it would work for me. I wanted to know what the supplement tasted like so my first use was with plain ol water. I put six full droppers into my water and took a sip. Not bad, not bad at all in fact I actually enjoyed the taste. It was a bit sweet and mostly tangy due to the apple cider vinegar in the product. If you are not a fan of acv then I suggest drinking in a tea or fruit juice. I began my cycle the next day as scheduled and continued to take the supplement with water for the next five days.

The Verdict?

The first two days of my cycle I had a bit of cramping but very mild compared to what I usually deal with, on the third day I did have to take an ibuprofen because I had a cramp attack at 2 am. However this cycle experience was significantly more comfortable and way beyond bearable. Here are the key things I noticed,

  • little to no bloat
  • increase in energy levels
  • no lower back pain
  • little to no cramping (except for the third night)

I also noticed an improvement in my overall mood too, which my partner so readily made known to me lol.  Overall I have to say I am beyond impressed with De Lune and the formula they have put together which includes powerhouse minerals and herbs like crampbark, magnesium, and vitamin b6. To read the full list of ingredients and how they work click here. Not to mention the formula is organic, gluten-free, vegan, non-gmo, made in the USA and comes in a class bottle, yaaaay. When it comes to period remedies I have tried them all- and this is the only product so far that has made a significant difference. I am so grateful to have had the chance to try this supplement and that it is formulated with ingredients that have been healers in the natural realm for centuries. The 30ml bottle will last approximately one to two cycles depending on how much you need and is priced at $30, they also have a subscription program where you can receive a monthly replenishment for a discounted price. Because this product worked so well for me I wanted to share it with all of you along with a special discount code De Lune so generously created for my followers. The Best Non-Toxic Cleansers For Seasonal Dry Skin

With changes in temperature comes changes in the way our skin functions. Cold weather is especially harsh on all skin types and can make existing issues seem much much worse. Lower humidity levels during the colder seasons dry the skin out leaving it feeling parched and looking dull. I always recommend that my clients switch their cleanser for winter time to help keep skin looking radiant all season long. The next 5 cleansers do not strip the skin of any moisture or natural oils, nor do they irritate it in any way. In fact when you use any of the following products your cleansing routine is transformed into an intensely hydrating and nourishing experience. Here are my top recommendations to add into your winter skin care routine and beyond, as always non-toxic and cruelty-free.

Luminous Melting Cleanser by Goop $90

This cleansing balm is truly an indulgent and luxurious experience, it leaves your skin feeling that way too. I find a lot of cleansing balms to just sit on top of the skin while working into skin, never quite doing much of anything, not this one. When you work this balm onto skin you immediately feel as if your skin is drinking it up. The texture of the balm is insane, the name is quite spot on as it literally melts into skin. The ingredient deck on this baby doesn’t disappoint either. You have the perfect blend of different plant oils and butters as well as brightening and anti-aging ingredients too. This formula contains poets daffodil which is proven to lighten pigmentation and brighten over all skin tone and sweet iris stem cells which strengthens elastin and builds healthy collagen. To use work about a dime size of balm onto a dry face to break up makeup, remove dirt as well as excess oil. Remove with a warm towel to reveal a glowing complexion.

Vitamin B Cleansing Oil + Makeup Remover by One Love Organics  $42

This is my holy grail cleanser guys. First of all it smells like i’m about to sip on a pina colada on the sand in Maui, too good. A couple of pumps of this silky oil removes dirt, oil, stubborn makeup, and it EXFOLIATES. Whaaaaa… There are papain enzymes in this formula which comes from papaya. Enzymes are amazing gentle exfoliants that gently digest dead surface skin cells leaving fresh smooth skin that is ready to receive all the yummy moisture your layer on after wards. I use this cleanser as my first cleanse in my double cleanse routine but many people use it as their one and only cleansing product. It is great for all skin types and can be left on for 5- 10 minutes for extra enzymatic action. Not only does this cleanser do pretty much everything it also rinses completely clean when rinsed with water. Mic drop.

∇ Vital Foaming Cleanser by Nuori $35

I recently purchased this cleanser by Nuori because I love foaming cleansers but hate the way they make my skin feel. This is a moisturizing foaming cleanser that contains pomegranate enzymes and betaine. The enzymes slough off dead skin cells and the betaine is a powerful humectant that binds water to the skin. Betaine is found naturally in foods like sugar beets and spinach. This foam has a mousse like texture that turns into an oil when worked into the skin, so cool! It removes makeup as well as dirt, oil, and toxins. I love that it’s packed with antioxidants and soothing botanicals plus it rinses clean so no need for a warm towel here. I’m kind of obsessed with this brand right now tbh, their mission and standards are unlike any other in the clean beauty world right now and I’m not complaining. Two pumps of this cleanser is enough for the whole face, work it in and rinse off to reveal soothed, glowy skin.

Wild Rose Beauty Balm by Neal’s Yard Remedies $74

I’ve been testing this balm out for the past two weeks and am now officially addicted. I keep this baby by my bedside to hydrate and heal different parts of my body. This decadent blend of oils, butters, and waxes delivers. The first ingredient in this product is wild rosehip seed oil which has such a high concentration of vitamin A it is often referred to as natures retinol. You also have hemp seed oil which is SO good for the skin as well as essential oils like patchouli and geranium to transport you to another dimension. This balm is great for healing chapped lips, overnight moisture mask, cleanser, cuticle oil, moisturizer or whatever else your heart desires. My absolute favorite way to use this product is applying a thick layer as a mask then steaming my face for 5 minutes then warm towel it off. My skin is left feeling so soft and hydrated for hours. Incorporating a treatment like is once or twice a weak will heal your skin and get rid of dehydration cold weather can cause.

Beat Dry Skin With These 8 Winter Tips

The winter season brings joy, celebration, and often times overindulgence. Keeping your skin in tip top shape requires a little extra TLC during winter months. Changes in weather, humidity, and eating habits all affect the way our skin looks and feels. To keep on glowing into the New Year and beyond I have put together some easy to follow tips and product recommendations that will not let you down!

1 Exfoliate– Many people stay away from exfoliation when their skin is feeling or looking dry, however exfoliation is essential to the healing of dry skin. Instead of a traditional scrub which is a form of manual exfoliation reach for enzymes which are extremely gentle on the skin. Enzymes come from fruit, usually pineapple or papaya and they chomp away at dead surface skin cells, think “pacman”. The release of these dead skin cells allow all the products you put on your skin after wards to penetrated deeper which makes them more effective

2 Add– Different seasons call for different products or the deduction/addition of certain products. In the winter I recommend adding in a balm as well as a hydrating serum. I like to press a balm into the skin as the last step of my night time skin care routine which gives the skin a protective layer throughout the night. Adding in a hydrating serum is a great way to target dryness and quickly boost moisture levels

3 Layer– By now we’ve all seen or heard people talk about K Beauty. Layering is a big part of K beauty and those who have tried this technique have reported a visible difference in the look and feel of their skin. Layering skin care from lightest to heaviest ensures that every level of the dermis is targeted. For winter time I like to add an essence and balm to my routine to help seal in all the moisture I can. After cleansing and exfoliating spritz face with a hydrating mist, next is an essence which is like a lightweight serum, after that is serum followed by a moisturizer, the last step to this layering technique is a balm that is pressed all over the skin which helps to “seal” everything in as well as protect you from trans epidermal water loss while you sleep. The result? Waking up to a plump complexion, yay!

4 Mask– Masking is a great way to solve your dry skin woes. Using a hydrating mask 2-3 times a week will significantly boost moisture levels as well as calm irritated or inflamed skin. I love Josh Rosebrook’s Advanced Hydration Mask ($65) which can be used daily. It contains botanical hyaluronic acid as well as polysaccharides which help your skin cells hold on to moisture

5 Humidify– Winter months often bring dry air which further aggravates and dehydrates skin. Humidifiers put moisture back into the air which comes with a long list of benefits for your skin and immunity. Investing in a humidifier for your bedroom or home is a great way to combat dry skin, it can also help prevent the flu and alleviate sinus issues

6 H20– Our skin is the largest organ we have and it does so much to protect us. It is so important to up your water intake during the winter season not only for skin health but internal health as well. Drinking more water during these months will help boost your immune system and keep skin supple all winter long. Try adding extra hydration boosters like The Beauty Chef’s Hydration Inner Beauty Boost ($50), its one of my absolute favorite products infused with aloe, coconut, lemon myrtle, and probiotics! This daily supplement can be added to water or your favorite smoothie to maintain gut health and boost hydration levels

7 Supplement– One great way to combat dry, irritated winter skin is to add supplements to your diet. Omega-3s are a great addition to any skin care regimen which helps to boost hydration levels internally. Black seed oil is another great supplement when taken internally delivers essential fatty acids like Omega 3 and 6 to boost as well as retain hydration in the skin.

8 SPF– Don’t forget the sunscreen! Just because the sun is not always in sight doesn’t mean that damaging UV rays are at rest. It’s super important to continue to protect your skin with an SPF of at least 30 in order to prevent sun damage, hyper pigmentation, and premature aging. During winter months the suns UVA rays penetrate through clouds, car windows, and office windows so this step is crucial to maintaining the health of your skin
I hope these tips help you target and treat dry winter skin!  Keep on glowing on.

Cannabis And Skincare, A Match Made In Heaven

If you live in the state of California then you most likely know that Cannabis is soon to be legal for recreational use. At face value prop 64 seems like a progressive step forward for an industry that is constantly working hard to break the stigma attached to it, but once you dive in a little deeper there are a lot of unknowns surrounding the execution of this proposition. With this prop Cannabis will be heavily taxed and there will be many rules and regulations that have to be created by the state to ensure safety. It is an exciting time to be alive but as a cannabis advocate it is important to me to keep the plant sacred and protect the people who have devoted their lives to helping others by growing this amazing plant provided to us by mother earth. This is a topic for a future post but one I definitely would like to explore.

As the industry begins to evolve there are so many new cannabis based products on the market. You can find anything from soothing topicals to calm inflammation and ease pain to personal lubricants that enhance your sexual experience. I am starting to see brands integrate cannabis into products that appeal to the modern health/wellness junkie, which has allowed cannabis to be looked at in a different light. The most exciting thing I have seen so far though is cannabis in SKINCARE! There are a handful of cannabis infused skin care brands that I have been following for quite a while and as time goes on the list keeps growing. I thought I would take time today to share with you why and how Cannabis works in skincare as well as what skin issues it can help address.

First things first, we all have a network of receptors throughout our body that is called the Endocannabinoid System. This endocannabinoid system contains cannabinoid receptors that regulate things like appetite, mood, and pain. Now from what I have read and heard at panels and discussions scientists are not sure what came first, the plant or the system within us, which is quite interesting if you start to think about it. So either this magical plant evolved overtime for our health benefits or our bodies did. There is still very little research available about the benefits of the plant on our bodies due to lack of funding by the government, they have only provided funding for research on the negative effects of cannabis which will hopefully change in the future. So imagine all of the endless possibilities for medical use that this amazing plant holds within itself? We have all heard miracle stories from word of mouth or social media talking about the relief and healing that cannabis has brought to people from just one dose. I mean…we have literally just scratched the surface.

(photo via

Back to skincare… So the cannabis plant contains CBD and THC which are both powerful cannabinoids. CBD is non-psychoactive (won’t get you high but will induce a calm, relaxed state) and THC, which gives you that “high” feeling. Both molecules are beneficial in regulating anything out of balance individually but they work phenomenally when used together. In skincare CBD will most likely be what is most used but small amounts of THC could enhance and even strengthen the benefits on the skin when applied topically via an oil, serum, or moisturizer. Cannabinoids have been shown to alleviate psoriasis, acne, excessive oil production, dermatitis, eczema, and signs of aging. Let’s break it down a bit more.

Acne- Cannabinoids work as an anti inflammatory so topically applying cannabis oil to the skin will help to speed of healing and soothe acneic skin types without clogging the pores.

Excess Oil Production- Cannabinoids communicate with the sebocytes in your skin which are the cells that make up your oil glands. They literally tell your cells to stop making so much oil. This regulating effect results in more balanced clear skin. Excess oil production is also what causes acne so it’s a win win here.

Psoriasis- Anti inflammatory effects of cannabinoids help to slow and heal psoriasis.

Eczema & Dermatitis- Anti inflammatory effects of cannbinoids calm itchy irritated skin and heal eczema.

Anti Aging- Cannabinoids are an extremely potent antioxidant which help extend the life of your cells by preventing free radical damage that attacks skin and kills cells. In certain cities like Los Angeles the air quality is poor so you want to make sure you are applying antioxidants daily.

Wow, isnt that amazing and crazy all at the same time! There is still loads of research to be done when it comes to understanding just how powerful this plant can be but the future looks hopeful and I can’t wait to see it all unfold.
